ae/ae and ax/a mice produced identical restriction fragments when digested with BssHII, MluI, NotI, SacII, and SfiI and probed with a Psp probe (Shaw, P., and Schibler, U., (1986) J. Mol. Biol. 192:567-576), whereas mice of a aa6H/ai had aberrant NotI (850 kb and 775 kb) and BssHII (675 kb and 600 kb) fragments. In a cross between a16H/ai x ae/ae it was observed that these fragments segregated with the x-irradiated ai allele. This altered restriction pattern of ai was only detected with the Psp probe. The lower molecular weight of this fragment suggest a deletion of approximately 75 kb in ai. Analysis of the ai fragments also indicated that the locus for Psp is no further than 600 kb from ai on Chromosome 2.
