C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) differ in susceptibility to Sendai virus infection. B6 is resistant whereas D2 is susceptible to Sendai virus. Various crosses using B6 and D2 were utilized in a genome wide scan with STS markers to indentify QTL responsible for the resistant/susceptible phenotype. A significant locus, Ssen1, in mouse Chromosome 4 at 23 cM was found between D4Mit146 and D4Mit204 with a LRS of 14.5. Suggestive linkage was found in chromosome 8, between D8Mit4 and D8Mit100 and again in chromosome 14 between the centromere and D14Mit10. The authors investigated epistatic interaction using (B6 X D2) backcross mice. A significant epistatic interactions were found between D3Mit182 and D14Mit10 with a p value less the 0.0001. The chromosome 3 locus was designated as Ssen2 and as Ssen3 for the chromosome 14 locus. A list of candidate genes for Ssen1, Ssen2 and Ssen3 are listed in table 2 of the mapping reference.
