  While sequencing directly upstream of exon 1 in A^vy DNA and upstream of exon 2 in a^iy DNA, the authors found IAP sequences in between which were transcribed in the opposite orientation. Observations indicate the IAP sequences cause the A^iy and a^vy mutations.
