    Because the locus Pla2g2a mapped to the same region of Chromosome 4 as Mom1 the authors investigated Pla2g2a as a candidate gene for Mom1. Using Nouthern blots the authors found no expression of Pla2g2a in strains of mice susceptible for colorectal cancers, whereas resistant strains express the gene. Sequence analysis of cDNA's from both susceptible and resistant strains revealed that the Pla2g2a gene in susceptible strains contains a thymidine insert at position 207 that causes a frameshift mutation andtruncated transcript. The combined evidence suggests strongly that Pla2g2a is the candidate gene for Mom1.
