LG/J and SM/J females display distinct maternal performance, and milk ejection at D1 seems to be a major difference between them. Linkage analysis was performed on a mapping population of 234 female (LG/J x SM/J) F2 intercross mice to identify QTL related to milk ejection one day after birth. The authors used 101 polymorphic loci covering the 20 chromosomes as completely as possible (genome build not given). One QTL reaching genome-wide significance was identified, referred to in the manuscript as ME3 (Milk Ejection locus on chromosome 3). In accordance with MGD guidelines, MGD curatorial staff renamed this locus as Meq1 (Milk ejection QTL 1).

Meq1 maps to Chromosome 3 with a peak LOD score of 3.27. It is centered 14 cM downstream of the marker D3Mit14, 61.3 cM away from the most proximal marker of the telomere on Chromosome 3, and has a confidence region of 11 cM (57 - 68 cM). Meq1 exhibits a predominantly additive effect on milk ejection, in which females with the LG/J allele have better milk ejection first day after delivery compared to SM/J mice. Meq1 explains 8% of the total phenotypic variance in milk ejection at day 1.

Meq1 also interacts significantly with other regions across the genome (referred to as Me1, Me11.a, and Me12 in Table 4 of the manuscript). The authors found a major network involving 11 loci in ten connections and five small ones in which Meq1 plays a central role. With epistasis, all QTLs for milk ejection at day 1 account for 19% of the phenotypic variation (adjusted multiple r2). Due to the lack of LOD scores reported for the interactive loci, MGI was unable to assign official nomenclature to the additional interactive QTL.
