Targeted inactivation of this gene causes no apparent phenotype. Hemizygous males carrying the HygTk gene of a null allele are sterile, likely due to aberrant expression of the Tk gene in the testis; phenotypic correction is obtained with a second null allele that does not contain the Tk gene.
