Homozygotes for targeted mutations show absence of shaft connectors from vestibular hair bundles, postnatal degeneration in cochlear hair-bundle structure, reduced transducer currents but otherwise normal adaptation properties, a progressive loss of basal-coil cochlear hair cells, and deafness.
