Homozygotes for targeted null mutations exhibit hypoplastic lungs and kidneys with abnormal vasculature of these organs and the hemopericardium, and die at birth due to respiratory failure. Homozygotes for some mutations are also asplenic. Some alleles cause sex reversal in XY mice.
