Mice homozygous for a null allele show reduced muscle cell glucose uptake, anemia, reticulocytosis, splenomegaly, increased erythrocyte turnover and plasma erythropoietin levels, and female subfertility associated with decreased litter size, reduced ovulation rate and a hyperandrogenic response.
