Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit lethality prior to genotyping. Mice heterozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit impaired glucose tolerance and female-specific increases in hepatic triglyceride levels. Some homozygous knockouts are viable but suffer from progressive retinal degeneration.
