Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele are viable and exhibit normal body weight and no significant changes in plasma, liver, or fecal levels of cholesterol and various plant and animal-derived sterols under divergent dietary cholesterol conditions, but do show decreased deoxycholic acid and increased plasma cortisol levels under low dietary cholesterol.
