Embryos homozygous for a knock-out allele do not develop past blastocyst formation, fail to hatch from the zona pellucida or hatch but do not form typical outgrowth colonies, and show peri-implantation lethality, defective epiblast and primitive endoderm lineages, increased embryonic tissue cell apoptosis, and reduced cell proliferation.
