While males show normal incidence of streptozotocin-induced insulin-dependent diabetes, they are protected from key features of diabetic kidney disease, including renal dysfunction, glomerular expansion, renal fibrosis, and glomerular basement membrane thickening compared to diabetic wild-type mice.
