This locus encodes a cis-acting transcription regulator that controls RNA transcripts of its structural gene in liver. In some strains, including DBA/2 and BALB/c, these transcripts are synthesized constitutively; in others, including C57BL/6 and C3H/He they are induced by inflammation.
