This locus, in the PAR region of X and Y, controls X-Y chromosome dissociation. BALB/c has the a allele; M.m. molossinus the b allele. Homozygotes of either allele have low dissociation (<30 percent); heterozygotes have high dissociation (>70 percent). Autosomal factors also affect the phenotype.
